Ragnall's Grotto
In legend, Dame Ragnall, a hideous hag, saved King Arthur’s life and as payment demanded to marry one of his knights. All the knights and nobles were horrified but Sir Gawain agreed to marry Ragnall. At the wedding feast, she requested a kiss from Gawain and when he obliged, Ragnall transformed into a beautiful woman. However, she told him she could only appear “fair by night and foul by day or foul by night and fair by day.” She left it to Gawain to decide. After much thought, Gawain gave the choice back to Ragnall. She was overjoyed and cried “My lord, you are as wise as you are noble and true, for you have given me what every woman genuinely desires, sovereignty over herself.” This lesson is to give Nature her freedom and she will show you her beauty.
